The Journey Home - written when i was 11
The journey home
As I got on the train with my brothers
and sister, Lucas, Kate and Nick, I shot a glance at our used - to – be home, I
felt a sudden rush of emotion and turned away quickly. “I mustn’t cry. Don’t be
such a cry baby.” I thought to myself. I could already feel moisture in my
eyes. I hurried along the aisles and took my seat next to Lucas in the cabin.
We waited in silence for the train to move. I checked my bag for our
train tickets. So this was it. We really were leaving. All of a sudden, Nick
broke the silence by exclaiming,” I know! Why don’t we all play a word game!”
good old Nick. He was always the one to lighten the mood when we were being
reprimanded by my father. The train began to move. There was no turning back
now. Oh why did that woman have to come and wreck our family? It was all her
fault. I recounted the day that I had told my mother about the secret affair
that my father was involved in and the events that followed. The shouting. The
crying. The divorce.
I burst into tears at the memory. “I’m sorry” I cried out amidst tears,”
I promised myself I wouldn’t be such a cry baby.” Lucas rubbed my back as a
gesture of comfort.
When I had stopped crying, I thanked Lucas again for paying our train
fare. My eldest brother held his hand up and shook his head.’ We are all one
family. We should stick close to each other and share weal and woe. Plus, I’m
the eldest, I should be the one who provides for all of you.’ Finally, the train stopped. I held my two
younger sibling’s hands and Lucas carried all our baggage down the train. We
had begun our journey to our new home in Manhattan .
